If you’re looking to reduce, reuse, recycle as well as give back, here are five Bandon spots to shop, recycle and support community causes.

BeginAgains

Store owner Becky Taylor uses Begin Agains Consignment as a satellite receiving station for the Coos County Animal Shelter. Taylor collects donations of supplies, such as blankets and animal beds, towels, collars, leashes, dog and cat food.

“Bandon is so good at giving us supplies,” said Taylor. “Every week I have loads of stuff to take to the shelter.”

Taylor has applied for nonprofit status with the state, which she says will improve the store’s function in fundraising for the animal shelter. In the meantime, community members may choose to donate items for sale outright, with profits to benefit the animal shelter. Those proceeds help offset the shelter’s veterinary expenses and purchase items from their wish list.

“I don’t want people to forget about the animals. That’s my goal,” said Taylor. Begin Agains sells women’s clothing and accessories, and recently expanded to include household furniture and decorative items. Donations are accepted during business hours.

Bree’s Upscale Resale

Bree’s Foundation, under the leadership of Kathy Pennington, has sponsored breast cancer education for 12 years. Stores are located in Bandon, Coquille and Coos Bay.

“We promote and celebrate breast cancer survival,” said Pennington. Bree’s collects and distributes prostheses for women after mastectomy and provides up to $100 for the cost of mammogram cancer screening.

Donations of clothing and accessories for the whole family are accepted any time during regular business hours. Pennington credits the store’s employees and volunteers with the labor of sorting, cleaning and presenting the donations.

“The women who are working and volunteering at Bree’s are so wonderful. I put them on a pedestal,” said Pennington. Kiwanis Thrift Store

Bandon Kiwanis president Donna Hannah says the service club’s goal is to help children in the community. Local programs include Ocean Crest Terrific Kids, Harbor Lights Builders Club and the Bringing Up Grades program and the Bandon High School Key Club. Kiwanis also provides free children’s bicycle helmets through the Bandon Police Department.

“All the profit that we make from the thrift store goes back into the community,” said Hannah.

The thrift shop carries clothing for men, women and children, small household furnishings and appliances, books and collectibles. They do not sell used televisions or computers. Club member and store clerk Sheila Levinsky would like to remind community members that donations are accepted during business hours and should not be left at the store after hours or on weekends.

Our Store

Our Store was established to support the Bandon Community Youth Center, which offers free and low-cost activities and programs for local youth. The youth center also offers after-school tutoring for elementary through high school students. Youth Center director Harv Schubothe says store proceeds are applied to the general budget and help cover operating expenses and staff salaries — keeping the doors to the center open.

“Our most popular program is our tutoring program that we offer after school,” said Schubothe.

Our Store offers housewares, furniture, appliances, books and gift items, but no clothing. Donations are accepted before 2 p.m. during business hours. Schubothe suggests that a phone call to arrange drop-off is appreciated.

Southern Coos Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop

According to hospital auxiliary liaison Treva Brown, the auxiliary has offered between $9,000 to $10,000 worth of donations to the Southern Coos Hospital each of the last two years.

Auxiliary volunteers help with clerical tasks, serve refreshments at art show openings and run the gift shop. The money the shops earns is then pooled with other donation and grant sources to purchase equipment such as the recently updated radiology equipment in the imaging department.

Hospital visitors can browse a reasonably priced selection of small gift items including jewelry, figurines and hand-tied fishing lures. Those interested in volunteering for the auxiliary can pick up applications at the gift shop.
