» School District considers budget

The Bandon School District Budget Committee is reviewing and will recommend a budget for the 2009-10 school year, despite state numbers that seem to continually change.

The budget committee will meet at 6 p.m. Friday, and the budget is scheduled for adoption after a public hearing at 7 p.m., Monday, June 8, in the district cafeteria.

Schools Superintendent Diane Buche presented the budget message last week.

“No matter what number we use (to budget with), considering roll up costs and other increases, we had to be thinking about what could be cut from the current budget and still provide a quality education,” Buche told the committee.

The proposed $7.32 million budget for the district includes the elimination of a high school English teaching position, the high school P.E. position, and also includes cuts in supply and technology hardware accounts. Increases are due to bargained salaries and benefits, PERS costs, unpredictable fuel costs and increases in resolution and contract services.

The budget includes a full-time principal in each of the school buildings. To balance the General Fund budget for 2009-10, $264,703 was transferred from the Capital Improvement Fund. The district also anticipates using $780,050 in ending fund balance from 2008-09, leaving $217,000 or 3.05 percent in reserves.
